Define Fear to Overcome It

Think about a fear you have…hold onto it. What kind of fear is it? Is it a fear of what you will gain from making the change? Is it a fear of what you will lose? Or, is it a fear of not being able to control the future? Fear can be defined as fear of gain, fear of loss or fear of the unknown. For example, maybe you are considering a new career, starting your own business, or relocating. Each one of these life changes can cause anxiety as you start to think about what might happen. A new career might mean gaining longer hours at work or maybe it won’t. Starting your own business might result in losing part of your income or maybe it will lead to financial success. Relocation might make you uneasy as you are unsure what to expect or maybe you will be enriched by the new experience.

Steps to Overcome Fear

Granted, it’s easier said than done. So, you’ll need to strengthen those fear-demolishing mental muscles with this helpful exercise:

1. Visualize the change you want to make. As you imagine taking action, fear will creep in as you revel in the sunny possibilities of what may come. When the darkness sets in and you hit a fear point – replace it with positivity. You must retrain your mind with images of success.

2. Take small steps towards facing your fear. Action is a crucial key to extinguishing fear. The more actionable steps you take toward making a change, the more your fears will be calmed. Write a to-do list, make phone calls, set appointments, do research – idleness is your enemy in combatting fear.

3. Take a deep breath and come back to it. Fearing a major life change is normal, but stress will only heighten your fear level. When you feel overwhelmed, step back and return later to practice visualization and tasks with a refreshed mind.
