5 Powerful Ways to Increase Your Self-Esteem
Simply put, self-esteem is the way you view yourself. Some people are said to have good self-esteem, while others are thought to have “bad” self-esteem. Typically, the combination of our speech, facial expressions and posture can give others a good indication as to whether our self-esteem is healthy or unhealthy.
At Live Lethal, the aim is to boost your self-confidence so you can achieve your personal goals. Here are 5 powerful ways to increase your self-esteem:
1. Create a picture of your self-esteem. Reflect on the words you use when you speak about yourself. Do you downgrade your achievements or combat someone else’s compliments of you with belittling humor about yourself? If you have trouble giving yourself kudos or accepting a compliment, look in the mirror and thoughtfully congratulate yourself on a recent success by describing what you did to get yourself to the finish line.
2. Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses. Is your list of strengthens much shorter than your list of weaknesses? If so, reexamine your weaknesses one-by-one and think of a time when you exhibited strength in a situation that could have fit your definition of a weakness if you had handled it differently. For example, if you wrote you are lazy, consider an instance in which you accomplished more than you thought you could.
3. Challenge yourself. Adjust your approach before you tackle something to turn what could be a weakness into a strength. For instance, if you think you are shy and you see that as a weakness, initiate and engage in a conversation with a friend or coworker.
4. Redefine your weaknesses. Some of your weaknesses can be viewed as strengths depending on the context. You may in fact be self-sabotaging yourself instead of lifting yourself up. For example, if you see yourself as a quitter and your proof is that you quit a past job and/or didn’t see a job lead through to the interview stage, review the reasons behind your past decisions. Chances are you made the right choice for you at that moment in time, which means you don’t deserve the label of “quitter.”
5. Understand that no one is perfect. Everyone’s list of weaknesses has entries. Attempting to achieve perfection will only damage your self-esteem in the long-run. A healthy amount of acceptance that no one is perfect will increase your self-esteem and put your personal goals within your reach.
