4 Ways To Combat Food Cravings

Craving food that is good or bad for you should signal to you that it’s time to take a closer look at your physical and emotional state. While it can be difficult to determine the exact cause behind your yearning for a certain food, here are Live Lethal’s 4 ways to combat food cravings and improve your overall health:

1. De-stress and practice self-care. You may discover a food craving appears when you are feeling stressed or emotional. So before you start reaching for that pint of ice cream or chocolate bar, pause and think about what it is that you’re really seeking.  Is it excitement?  Happiness? Are sad or lonely?  Make a list of things to do that don’t involve eating before the next craving strikes. Chances are the things you wrote down, such as picking up the phone to call a friend, listening to music, watching a movie, getting out in nature, or visiting a loved one will be just what you were craving! In addition, Live Lethal suggests engaging in exercise on a daily basis to reduce your stress levels and improve your disposition. Feeling great and having energy can help you think twice before reaching for that bag of salty chips!

2. Clear out the junk food before your hormones fluctuate. The monthly change in hormone levels is often to blame for food cravings and a significant increase in the ingestion of junk and chocolatey foods. A helpful tip is to remove processed snack foods from your pantry and purchase sweet seasonal fruits from your grocery store. You may not be initially happy when your hormones force you to rummage through your kitchen and those complex carbs are gone, but you’ll be thankful you didn’t indulge after your hormones level out.

3. Track your daily caloric intake. Your smart phone is equipped to download any number of helpful apps that will calculate your caloric intake, breakdown the number of calories you should consume on a daily basis and how many you have left for the day. If you are feeling the urge to give into a junk food craving, your caloric tracking app will let you know how much your junk food will cost you.

4. Eat healthy instead of eating less. If you starve your body, you will begin to crave all types of foods and may gorge yourself when your plan to eat as little as possible collapses. Eating healthy will give you energy, boost your immune system and lead to natural weight loss when it is combined with daily exercise.

If you find yourself craving specific foods despite following the helpful advice above, you should consider making an appointment with your primary care doctor and consult with a nutritionist to evaluate your current state of health.
